In the mid-1970s, large areas of bamboo forests wilted and died, causing many giant pandas to starve to death. Humans began to carry out various rescue activities. In 2016, the IUCN reclassified great pandas from ‘endangered’ to ‘vulnerable’, affiing decade-long efforts to save them.
